Orange Julius Treat for Teachers to Reward Teachers with Classroom Supplies for the New School Year

Essay contest is presented by Orange Julius at DQ®

MINNEAPOLIS – According to the 2013 National School Supply and Equipment Association (NSSEA) Retail Market Awareness Study, public school teachers spent $3.2 billion in educational products during the 2012-2013 school year, and $1.6 billion of that came out of their own pockets.

To help teachers ease that financial burden, the Dairy Queen® system has launched the Orange Julius® Treat for Teachers essay contest, presented by Orange Julius at DQ®, which gives teachers an opportunity to receive funding for classroom supplies just in time for the new school year. The essay contest celebrates the Dairy Queen system’s offer in August for fans to enjoy a variety of fruit-blended beverages including Orange Julius Premium Fruit Smoothies, Light Smoothies and Julius® Original drinks at just $1.49 for a 12-ounce size at participating locations.

From now through Sunday, September 22, teachers can log on to www.OrangeJuliusTreatforTeachers.com and submit an essay in 149 words or less on why their classroom deserves new supplies this school year.

Ten grand-prize winners will be awarded a $1,490 gift card for classroom supplies and another 100 teachers will receive a $149 gift card to an office supply retailer. The Orange Julius Treat for Teachers entry form and complete rules are available at www.OrangeJuliusTreatforTeachers.com.

“We know that teachers could spend as much as $1,500 out of their own pockets on basic necessities for their classrooms,” said Barry Westrum, executive vice president of Marketing for American Dairy Queen Corporation (ADQ). “With Orange Julius Treat for Teachers, we wanted to give them the opportunity to begin the school year with the supplies they need to help their students be successful. The Dairy Queen system truly appreciates the efforts of our teachers.”

Entries will be judged on content, essay development/organization, relevance to theme and creativity/originality.

International Dairy Queen, Inc. (IDQ) acquired the Orange Julius concept, famous for its frothy fruit-blended Julius Original drink, in 1987, but the highly popular brand has been around for more than 85 years. The original began with Julius Freed, who operated an orange juice stand in Los Angeles. His friend Bill Hamlin liked oranges, but they upset his stomach, so Bill decided to blend his orange juice with a few choice ingredients that made it less acidic. Bill introduced the drink to Julius who then began selling the frothy, delicious beverage to customers. Soon fans were shouting, “Give me an orange, Julius!” Sales escalated and the name of an original was born.
