Calling all filmmakers! N8tive Reel Cinema Festival is now accepting submissions for short films. Accepted films will be screened during the film festival on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Paradise Live, located at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way, Fort Lauderdale.
All submissions must be between five and 10 minutes in length and have an indigenous or Native American component such as culture, language or history. Entries must be submitted before January 13, 2017 to Tinyurl.com/NativeReel with a bio and promotional flyer. Accepted films will be announced January 23, 2017.
A collaborative effort between the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Seminole Paradise and the Historic Stranahan House Museum, N8tive Reel Cinema Festival is the first Native American film festival in the southeast U.S.
N8tive Reel Cinema Festival was recently awarded a $50,000 grant through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s 2016 Knight Arts Challenge Miami, which funds ideas that bring South Floridians together through the arts. N8tive Reel Cinema Festival was recognized for highlighting the words and works of indigenous peoples and providing an in-depth look into Native culture and tradition through cinema in America.
The inaugural N8tive Reel Cinema Festival, formerly Native Reel Cinema Fest, featured a free screening of Kiowa/Choctaw director and writer Steven Paul Judd’s film “Ronnie BoDean,” starring Wes Studi, a critically acclaimed Cherokee actor. The film, which was followed by an interactive Q&A session with Judd, showcased the first Native American ‘anti-hero,’ allowing for a new opportunity to explore the culture’s representation in films.
Special appearances were made by musician Spencer Battiest, the first American Indian artist to sign with Hard Rock Records, American actor of Comanche ancestry Gil Birmingham, best known for his portrayal of Billy Black in “The Twilight Saga” film series, and Canadian film and television actor Bronson Pelletier, best known for his portrayal of Quileute shape-shifter Jared in “The Twilight Saga” film series. Special guests of N8tive Reel Cinema Festival 2017 will be announced in January.
