FIU Economics Professor and BankUnited COO Share Thoughts on Post Pandemic Recovery

BankUnited presents a virtual “2021 Economic Outlook” free webinar geared toward business owners, on Thursday, January 21, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.; participants can register at https://bit.ly/2X9kqKT.

Hosted by BankUnited COO Thomas M. Cornish and featuring guest speaker Dr. Cem Karayalcin, professor and chair of the department of economics at Florida International University, they will discuss the short- and long-term regional, national and global economic outlook to help position business owners for success in the year ahead.

Professor Karayalcin leads the economics department at the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs at FIU. He holds a master’s degree and doctorate from Columbia University. He consults with the World Bank on development issues, and has published numerous journal articles on international macroeconomics. He has written on the historically divergent growth and development experiences of different regions of the globe, highlighting some of the political economy mechanisms that might account for this divergence.

Cornish joined BankUnited in 2014 as president of the bank’s Florida Region, before being named COO in 2017. A graduate of the FIU School of Business, and past chairman of the FIU Foundation Board of Directors, he was presented with the Torch Award, the FIU Alumni Association’s highest honor recognizing alumni and faculty who make a positive impact on their profession, the community and the university. He was inducted into the FIU School of Business Hall of Fame in 2013.
