Florida Career College Teams with Companies to Create Industry-Current Curriculum

School shares tips on turning business relationships into career opportunities

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 17, 2013) – College graduates whose courses of study correlate with a specific field and job skill experience lower unemployment rates than those who graduate with a general degree, according to a study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce. Fort Lauderdale-based Florida Career College (FCC) specializes in offering curricula that teach practical and applicable skills for specific industries. Through partnerships with national corporations, FCC instructors and executives are forging corporate relationships to give their students a competitive edge in the workforce.

“We regularly meet with business executives to uncover the knowledge and skills they seek in new hires and discuss how Florida Career College can prepare students to enter the real world,” said Lawrence Avers, Vice President of Student Development for Florida Career College. “We are leveraging our business connections and developing new ones to fulfill our mission of successfully preparing graduates for new career opportunities.”

Based on its current corporate relationships, Florida Career College has the following three recommendations for how schools and corporations can work together to create an industry-current curriculum:

1. Invite company executives to join your school’s advisory board and help shape the curriculum to fit their needs and ultimately better prepare students for employment.
2. Encourage instructors to visit business operations. The more knowledgeable an instructor is about a company, the more he or she can get students excited about the possibility of employment opportunities.
3. Develop well-rounded students with hard and soft skills. An employee must be adept at applying knowledge in a working environment but also must have people skills to further his or her success.

Margate-based Saveology is one of several noteworthy companies currently working on curriculum development with FCC.

“We have a symbiotic relationship with Florida Career College,” said Meredith Jimenez, Head of Corporate Development for Saveology.com. “We have a continuous need for highly trained computer technicians and salespeople for our MyTechHelp division. Florida Career College has helped meet this demand by referring graduating students who are eager to work in a fast-paced environment, as well as modifying their curriculum to meet our specific needs.”
