FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (September 23, 2014) – Renovations and upgrades to the iconic Pier 66 Marina are on schedule to be completed prior to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show®, for which the location will serve as the event’s seventh and newest show site.
Currently undergoing its first renovation since the yachting center’s launch more than five decades ago, phase one of the two-phase, $20 million project is complete and fully occupied. Phase two, to include the yacht basin and face dock, are scheduled to be completed by October 20. The first yachts to arrive in the new marina will be those to be displayed during the boat show and will begin move-in on October 27, prior to the October 30 opening of the show.
Exhibitors scheduled to be at the new location include Robert J. Cury & Associates; Woods & Associates Yacht Brokerage; Burger Boat Company; Chamberlain Yachts; Fraser Yachts; Caterpillar, Inc.; Talbot Freeman; International Yacht Collection; Merle Woods & Associates; and Edmiston & Company.
Upgrades to the 127-slip, deep-water marina include new bulkheads by South Florida-based Shoreline Foundation and Eco Building Solutions and a new Marinetek floating dock system equaling more than 3,600 linear feet of parallel dockage and fixed docks. The entire electrical infrastructure is being replaced with new power distribution, new dock pedestals and electrical capacity to include 480 volt 400-600 amp, three-phase power able to meet the needs of superyachts. A new dockmaster’s office and captain’s/crew clubroom will be located on the Intracoastal Waterway. Pelican Landing restaurant, located above the dockmaster’s office, also will be open for the boat show.
“The contractors working on this project bring years of marina construction experience and will deliver a state-of-the-art final product on schedule,” said Kevin Quirk, vice president of marinas for LXR Luxury Marinas, which operates the marina. “The first phase of the project was delivered on time and we anticipate the same for the final phase of construction. We’re really excited to begin welcoming our friends and clients back very soon.”
The new marina layout will accommodate 16 super yachts up to 150 feet, up from six prior to the redesign and has the deep-water capacity to accept yachts in excess of 300 feet.
Entering its 55th year, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest in-water boat show in the world, is set to take place from Oct. 30 through Nov. 3, attracting an international audience of thousands of marine enthusiasts to the “Yachting Capital of the World” to experience the single best showcase of marine products and accessories in the world.
